What am I working on this week?

I’m focusing on my adult supernatural-horror novel at the moment, working my way through it scene by scene using questions from Wired for Story to help me check that everything is making sense. This is the first time I’ve done this sort of analysis this early on in a novel and it’s a useful and interesting exercise.

Although the manuscript still has a long, long way to go – at least another 5 drafts – it is starting to take on shape and make a bit more sense. I have yet to work out all the rules of the world/s in which it operates (yes I’m a true pantser!) but am taking notes to make sure I’ve got all that bedded down. The other week I was thinking of chucking the whole thing so it’s good to feel that I’m making progress.

What’s inspiring me this week?

I’m about 3/4 through Claire Coleman’s Terra Nullius (which I bought at GenreCon and had signed by the author) and I am absolutely loving it. I don’t want to say too much about the book because there is a reveal about halfway through the book that took me completely by surprise but I’d rank it as one of 2017’s must reads. The way Coleman has threaded past history and potential future history through the narrative is fantastic. I don’t want to say too much else except grab yourself a copy and don’t even think about shoving it onto your TBR pile. Just read it.

What action do I need to take?

After a super busy November with 3 out of 4 weekends spent away from home I’m focusing putting my writing first. I did well this week so I need to keep up the momentum.
