What am I working on this week?

Another somewhat disjointed week this week where I didn’t do nearly as much writing as I’d have liked to but I did spend some time reviewing my current adult urban fantasy/horror manuscript. I’m making notes, cutting out some stuff that isn’t working at all and doing bits and pieces of rewriting but at this stage I’m more trying to get the overall piece in my head than do a proper rewrite.

At times during the week I despaired for the story and was thinking I may have to chuck the whole thing. But then I’d get to other sections that worked really  well and have exactly the tone and voice I’m aiming for. I’m a little over half-way through this read-through and at this stage the second half is working a lot better than the first. But I’ll continue to make notes all the way through and then look at some strategies to try and wrangle the mess into something that more closely resembles an actual novel.

What’s inspiring me this week?

I had a beautiful new piece of custom-made furniture delivered this week that’s part bookcase and part display unit. So I’ve been pulling all my books out from the various places where I’d shoved them while in between bookcases and putting them into the new one. I love looking over all my books, finding ones I’d forgotten I had, thinking back to the places I’d read them, who gave them to me, what struck me about the various stories.

I’ve discovered that the authors who appear the most in my collection are Stephen King, Kurt Vonnegut, J. M. Coetzee, Joyce Carol Oates, Margaret Atwood, Marianne de Pierres and Helen Garner. All very different writers, but I enjoy and admire their work particularly for their range and their insights into the human condition.

It’s fantastic to have a special place to put my books, even if only about a third of my overall collection can be displayed in it.

What action do I need to take?

With all the renovations happening at my place along with lots of stuff happening on weekends and a fair bit of travel, my writing schedule has been a bit out of sorts. I’m away next weekend, too, but will try to get my weekday schedule back on track (i.e stop obsessing over furniture websites) and in the first weekend of December I’m going to give myself my own mini writing retreat at home.
