What am I working on this week?
Finished off the edits on a short story and submitted it at the start of the week, so that was good. Then I got rejection for another short story this week. Sigh. But I’ve sent it off to another market. Reject in, submit out, same day if possible – that’s my aim. I had some edits to do to another short that is coming out in an anthology later this year and the Table of Contents have just been released, so that’s exciting. But I’ve spent most time on the novel rewrite. It’s coming along, just taking it sentence by sentence and not rushing the process.
What’s inspiring me this week?
I’m re-reading Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood for my book club and Oh My God I knew it was amazing but I’d forgotten just how amazing. I first read it in my 20s, I think, and again a decade or so ago. It breaks my heart a little to know that writing it basically destroyed Capote. But the writing is so fresh, so good. It’s an astounding piece of literature so if for some reason you’ve never read it, do so immediately!
What action do I need to take?
Just the action of sitting down and writing, really. I’m a bit distracted at the moment with planning a kitchen renovation but I’m trying hard to keep my focus on writing at least a little bit (even if only 30 minutes) every day.
