What am I working on this week?
During the week I took another look at a monster story for an anthology I’ve been invited to submit to. I tend to take a long time to write my short stories. I do a lot of revisions both before and after I start submitting to markets. I completed the first draft of this story in January and I think its evolving well.
This weekend I’ve been working through my novel manuscript, slowly, very slowly, but making progress. The pomodoro method is helping me a lot in working through this story. There are times when I want to get up and walk around, or check something online but knowing I have a time limit keeps me in front of the page.
What’s inspiring me this week?
I’ve set up my writing room so I write facing a poster of a Marc Chagall painting, I and the Village. I bought the poster a few years ago when I was in Liverpool for a research trip, and there just happened to be a Marc Chagall exhibition showing at the Tate Liverpool. I have loved Chagall’s work since I was first introduced to it way back when I was in high school. His use of colour, his whimsy, his symbolism, the way he plays with perspective, light and shape: all of it blows my mind. So when I’m feeling stuck with my writing I just look at the poster, and breathe. Soon enough, the words come.
What am I avoiding this week?
I feel like I’m getting back into my writing groove after a few up and down weeks, so I’m not really avoiding anything.
