What am I working on this week?
This week I’ve been focusing on my messy novel manuscript in an attempt to make it a little less messy. It’s slow work but I am making progress. This is a good thing, as I tend to want to rush writing so taking my time, and not worrying too much about self-imposed word counts or milestones, is allowing me to relax into the work more. I’m sorting out the structural problems and filling in gaps while developing the characters more along the way. It’s making me happy.
What’s inspiring me this week?
I watched a documentary (the first in a series) on abandoned places this week. The doco series is hosted by Canadian Rick McCrank, a professional skateboarder, and the first episode was about abandoned shopping malls in the USA. McCrank visited a few in Cleveland, Ohio, where the collapse of manufacturing has led to these giant shopping centres being left to rot.
I love abandoned spaces, and this episode didn’t disappoint, especially when the two guys showing McCrank around one mall that they’d loved in their childhood turned out to be paranormal enthusiasts with a whole heap of ghost busting equipment. The series is being shown on SBS and I’m looking forward to the rest of the episodes.
What part of my project am I avoiding?
Well, I was supposed to do a few maintenance type jobs around my apartment this week while I was on holidays. But I used the time to write instead. I’m at peace with my decision!
