What am I working on this week?

Still plugging along with the short story and the novel. Both are progressing well, if a little slowly. My experimentation with the pomodoro method with editing/rewriting the novel is working well. I definitely focus better when I know there is a time limit on on the writing spurts. I’m quite surprised at what a difference it’s making to  my productivity.

What’s inspiring me this week?

I got a really great rejection from Red Sun Magazine this week for a horror story that I’ve been shopping around for a while. This particular story has clocked up 12 rejections so far, and a couple of other editors have given me some good feedback but the Red Sun editor was fantastic. He wrote an almost 600 word analysis describing what he saw as the story’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as his reasons for ultimately rejecting it. I would have to say it’s the most comprehensive rejection I’ve had.

Every time a story is rejected I go back and rework it, and now I have some excellent direction for my rewrite of this particular story. It is absolute gold when an editor takes the time to discuss a piece of writing in this way, and I am forever in this editor’s debt. (Especially because he said I’m a “really terrific writer”!)

What part of my project am I avoiding this week?

Unusually for me, I am practicing a bit of strategic avoidance this week. An opportunity has come my way that could have a big impact on my writing career, and I’m unsure about the right path to take. So I’m avoiding thinking about it until an upcoming meeting where I’ll have the chance to talk about the pros and cons  of the decision at length. I know I’m being a bit cryptic, but all will be revealed in the fullnesss of time. Unless, of course it isn’t.
