What am I working on this week?

I’m staying focused on 2 projects: the short story for an anthology and the children’s book. The short story is on track. Sometimes the words are trickling rather than flowing but I’m continuing to get them down on the page. It’s a tricky story to write so I’m taking my time. The children’s novel is coming along, too. There is a lot of rewriting involved because I’m basically reconstructing the central plot, which of course impacts everything. But I love my main character. She’s so fun and quirky  she makes the pain of a major rewrite worthwhile.

What’s inspiring me this week?

This week I went to my first ever book club. Yes, it’s true, I was a book club virgin until Friday night. I really enjoyed the experience. It was a small group – only 5 people at this meeting – but that’s possibly because we were tackling Hanya Yanagihara’s 720 page tome A Little Life. Impressions about the book among the group were mixed but the discussion was varied and interesting with lots of great insights. I think hearing the perspectives of avid and passionate readers in a small setting not only adds to my enjoyment of reading but also to my ability to understand how readers relate to storytelling, and what moves them.

If  you want to know my thoughts, here’s my review of A Little Life.

What part of my project am I avoiding?

I seem to be back on track this week. Holidays are well and truly over and I’m back into the rhythm of day job and writing life. No avoidance issues here!
